TELC Polish Exam Preparation B1–B2: Courses, Format, and Tips

You know you need a Polish language certificate. But the question that stops most people: where do you start, how much time do you need, and how hard is the TELC exam if your Polish exists but isn’t quite at the required level?

The VisaV.pl team works daily with people who have moved or are planning to move to Poland — and sees the same thing every time: the certificate is needed, deadlines are pressing, and how to prepare is unclear. This article answers every question in order.

Why You Need a TELC Certificate: Real Situations

A TELC Polish language certificate isn’t just paperwork — it opens specific doors:

  • EU long-term resident card — requires confirmed Polish proficiency at B1 level. A TELC B1 certificate fully satisfies this requirement and is accepted by voivodeship offices
  • Admission to Polish universities — studying in Polish requires a B2 certificate. Since 1 August 2025, applicants from outside the EU must provide exactly this document
  • Naturalization and Polish citizenship — confirming B1 language level is a mandatory condition
  • Certain employers and government institutions — increasingly request documented proof of language level
TELC is a dual exam: one sitting, two possible outcomes. Depending on your score, you’ll receive either a B1 or a B2 certificate. If you only need B1 — you don’t need to worry about B2-level tasks. If your goal is B2 — you need to score at B2 level in at least 2 of the 3 modules, and the speaking module must be at B2 without exception.

What TELC Is and How It Differs From the State Exam?

TELC (The European Language Certificates) is an international language certification system that assesses real practical language ability according to the CEFR scale. The exam is conducted at authorized centers across Poland and isn’t tied to government-set exam sessions.

TELC vs the State Exam (Państwowy Egzamin Certyfikatowy):

  • TELC runs monthly at various centers — no waiting 2–3 months for the next government session
  • TELC focuses on practical communication — no complex essay or separate grammar section, making it more accessible
  • The state exam is harder: each section must be passed separately at the required percentage (60% for B2)
  • TELC results arrive in 6–8 weeks; the state exam takes up to 6 months
  • TELC cost: PLN 1,000–1,200 depending on the center
  • From April 2026, TELC certificates are issued exclusively in digital format

From VisaV.pl’s practice: for most clients needing a certificate for an EU long-term resident card, TELC is the optimal choice. It’s faster, more practically oriented, and you can register within a week of deciding. The state exam is better suited for those who specifically need an official government certificate for naturalization or who want to confirm C1 or C2 level.

TELC B1–B2 Exam Format: What’s Tested and How

Knowing the structure is half the battle. The exam takes place in one day and consists of two parts: written and oral.

Written part — 115 minutes

  1. Listening (Słuchanie) — understanding spoken language: dialogues, announcements, short texts
  2. Reading (Czytanie) — understanding written texts across different genres and styles
  3. Language structures (Elementy językowe) — grammar and vocabulary tasks
  4. Writing (Pisanie) — writing a letter or message on a given topic: 80–120 words for B1, 150–200 words for B2

Break — 20 minutes to prepare for the oral section

Oral part — 16 minutes

Conducted in pairs. Includes a monologue on a given topic, a dialogue with a partner, and interaction with the examiner.

“IMPORTANT WARNING”: to receive a B1 certificate, you need at least 50% of the total points. For B2, you must score at B2 level in at least 2 of the 3 written modules and — without exception — in the speaking module. Failing the oral section means no B2 certificate, even with a brilliant written result.

Why People Fail TELC and How to Avoid It

  • Preparing only grammar while ignoring listening and speaking — which often become the weak link
  • Not getting familiar with the format beforehand — losing time reading instructions during the exam
  • Not practicing time management — 115 minutes sounds enough, but without practice the time runs out surprisingly fast
  • Neglecting the oral section — assuming they’ll “just say something”. In practice, stress and unfamiliar format trip up even those who speak fine in everyday life
  • Registering for the exam without the required level
A practical tip from VisaV.pl: take at least one complete practice test under real conditions — with a timer, no dictionary, no phone. It immediately shows which sections need more work and whether your current level is realistic for the target result.

How VisaV.pl Prepares You for TELC: The Individual Approach

TELC preparation at VisaV.pl isn’t a standard school course where everyone follows the same curriculum. The programme is built individually for each participant.

Step 1: Entry testing and level assessment

Before training begins, a diagnostic test is conducted. All four skills are assessed: reading, listening, writing, and speaking. The result shows not just an overall level but specific gaps — for example, strong reading with weak listening, or good vocabulary with grammatical structure issues.

Step 2: Individual preparation plan

Based on the test, a personal plan is drawn up that accounts for current level, time available before the exam, schedule constraints, and the specific goal — B1 for residency or B2 for university.

Step 3: Intensive exam-format sessions

  • Breaking down the TELC format with real sample tasks
  • Listening practice on authentic materials with varied speed and accents
  • Writing practice aligned with TELC assessment criteria
  • Grammar structures characteristic of exam tasks
  • Speaking development — monologue, dialogue, argumentation
  • Tasks from previous TELC sessions
  • Time management strategies during the exam

Step 4: Full mock exam under real conditions

At the end of preparation, a complete practice exam runs under conditions as close to the real thing as possible. You get detailed feedback: what’s ready, what needs more work, and whether you should register for the next session or take a few more weeks.

Step 5: Help with exam registration

We help select a convenient exam center, understand registration requirements, and prepare for the logistical details of exam day — so there are no surprises.

An individual programme isn’t just a selling point. Someone at B1.2 who needs a B1 certificate for an EU resident card within 3 weeks needs a completely different preparation than someone at A2 who wants to enter university in a year. VisaV.pl accounts for these differences from the very first session.

How Long Does TELC Preparation Take

  • Level B1.1–B1.2 → B1 certificate: 2–4 weeks of intensive preparation
  • Level A2–B1.0 → B1 certificate: 6–10 weeks
  • Level B1.2–B2.0 → B2 certificate: 4–8 weeks
  • Level A2 and below → B2 certificate: 4 to 6 months of general learning plus exam preparation

State Polish Language Exam: What to Know Separately

For some purposes — particularly naturalization — the state certificate (Certyfikat Znajomości Języka Polskiego) is specifically required. In 2026, three sessions remain:

  • 27–28 June — B1 and B2 levels
  • 17–18 October — B1, C1, and C2 levels
  • 5–6 December — B1 level

The state exam is harder and requires more thorough preparation: each section is marked separately and a minimum of 60% is required for B2 and above. But the state certificate is accepted by every institution without exception. VisaV.pl prepares for both TELC and the state exam.
